A Watchman in Prayer

Last night (30.12.09) I had the opportunity to teach once again in our church. it is always a blessing! I started to teach a message that is actually going to be a two-part message that is entitled "The Call of a Watchman." Last night we focused on the point of a Watchman in Prayer. The main text for this message is Ezekiel 33:1-11.
So here are some of the thoughts that I shared...

What is a watchman?
Watchman - One set to watch; a person who keeps guard; It is a serious thing to be a watchman, for the destiny of precious souls are at stake

A Watchman in Prayer

• I believe that it is so important for us to start with this topic of Prayer!
• Before we talk about evangelism
• Before we talk about actually bringing the Gospel to the lost
• We must start in this topic of PRAYER!
• Why?

Hosea 10:12 “Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the LORD, Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.”

“Ground that hasn’t been plowed for more than a year is a ground that is hard and stubborn, resistant to the seed. It does little good to sow seed on fallow ground; it must be broken up first. Sometimes when the word of God goes forth and seems to have little effect, it is because it falls on fallow ground - the hard ground that will not allow the seed of the word to penetrate and become fruitful. Since fallow ground is hard, it probably doesn’t “want” to be broken up. It is hard and compact, and the blade of the plow hurts as it cuts through. ..Yet it is useless as ground as long as it is fallow.”
David Guzik – Near & True - Commentary on Minor Prophets

• I believe that the most powerful way we can break up the fallow ground for the sake of Herborn, is to labor for it in PRAYER!!!
As we continue to talk about a Watchman in Prayer, let’s talk about some statistics of our local area – our JERUSALEM…
• Herborn 20, 873 people
• Dillenburg 24,107 people
• Haiger 19,750 people
• Sinn 6,567 people
• Breitscheid 5, 022 people = 76,319 people

Would you please turn in your Bibles with me to…

2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.”

• Do you believe this?
• When we have the mindset of …”What can we do? We are just a small group of people in the midst of so many”… this is the wrong mindset!
• The correct view or mindset of what we need to have is…”We may only be a small group of people in the midst of so many, but we serve the Great God who is able to do all things…”

Can I ask you a question? When you hear the following verses, what do you think?

Matthew 21:22 “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."

Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

Mark 9:23 “Jesus said to him, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes."

• Do you think they are true?
• Do you believe it will happen in our day?
• Or was this for just something in the past?

Let’s turn to…
Matthew 9:35-38 “Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

• What did Jesus see? – He saw a people that were weary (harassed) and scattered. He saw a people like sheep without a shepherd.
• What did Jesus say? – the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few
• What did Jesus command them to do? – to PRAY

• When you look out over the city of Herborn (put your city here), what do you see?
• Do you see people that are weary (harassed) and scattered? Do you see them as sheep without a shepherd?
• What do you do about it?
• What can you do about it?
• Let’s do what Jesus said to do about it!
PRAY

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,”

Ezekiel 22:30 “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”

• I believe that the LORD is still looking for ONE who will make a wall
• ONE who will stand in the gap on behalf of the land
• May He find all of us being those people!

Next week we are going to be getting into part two of this message and looking at
a Watchman & Evangelism

A Radical Prayer Request

We got news from a family which some people from our church know from Burbach (a local village) . The family are Albanian Muslims. He has a brother which lives in Switzerland. He called his brother now here in Burbach and told him that he wants to become a Christian and wanted to know what he thinks about that.

He told him that he had an intense dream that Jesus was calling him and that he shall become a Christian. He dreamed the same dream again than. He prayed to God that if he would dream that again he would become a Christian. And he dreamed it again.

His brother here in Burbach told him now that it would be OK for him.
The family in Albania is freaking out and upset.

Please be praying for this man and his family!!!

German Class Update

Hello Everyone, I want to give you an update of what is going on with my German Class. A few weeks ago I asked all of you to please pray in regards to a letter that I would give my classmates. During our last days in our class before the Christmas break, I passed out this letter to them. Rebecca was also such a blessing and made all of them christmas cookies and wrapped them in individual bags as a gift to each of them. This all took place on a Thursday. During this day my classmates asked me to play some music for them since they all knew that I played the guitar and sang. So one of the students quickly went home to get a guitar so that I could give them a mini "concert." My only fear was that the guitar would be so out of tune... and that is exactly what happened. This guitar had such old guitar strings on it, that there was no one that could tune it in the class. So I decided to bring my guitar the next day. It was great! I had the opportunity to play 4 German worship songs and 1 English Christmas song! They said they all loved it! What an opportunity! I never thought that would happen! But when we are willing, God is able to do great things!
So far, no one commented on the letter that I gave to them, but maybe after the break, some discussions might arise. So please pray for that! Here is a little video slide show of my classmates and I to give you an idea of who to pray for! And for those of you who are new to the blog... my classmates are from Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, North Africa, India, Poland, Czeck Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, and one other American.

Below is the letter that I wrote to them...

Greetings to all of my classmates and teachers,
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I want to take this opportunity to write to you and share with you some things from my heart. First of all, I want you to know that I am so thankful for each of you. It is amazing to think that at the beginning of this year, we didn’t know each other at all, and yet as we are coming to the end of this year, I feel as though we have truly become a family. As we look over this past year, we have been through many situations together and as I have sat back and watched each of you, I have truly seen a love for one another. I have thoroughly enjoyed our time together throughout this year. I have enjoyed the times of laughter, the time that we have spent getting to know each other, helping each other understand this German language, and so much more. Everyday I come home and tell my wife how the class went, what conversations we had, and what we are learning. Once again, I am so thankful for each of you and that I have been able to be a part of your lives throughout this year. Secondly, as I look ahead, I do know that our time will come to an end and we will all part in our different ways. And for this, I am saddened. In fact, a few weeks ago, I told my wife that I will miss seeing each of you and it is my prayer that we can really stay in contact somehow. I know that we have joked around about getting together as a class someway, somehow, and I hope we do. I personally would like to have each of you and your family over to my house some time for a meal together, if that is even possible. So I will truly enjoy our time together, as long as we have it. If you are interested in having our families get together, as hard as it may be because of the different languages, please let me know, and we can try to set it up.
The Last reason why I am writing to all of you, is because it is Christmas time! This is one of my favorite times of the year. This is one of the times of the year that we get together with all of our friends, family, and relatives. We give gifts to each other, sometimes some really special gifts to let the other person know how much they mean to us or how much we love them. So since I don’t have enough money to buy all of you gifts, I want to tell you about a gift that was given to me so many years ago that has completely changed my life, and I believe it is the greatest gift that I can give to you this Christmas.
You see, the gift that I am talking about is the gift of love. But what do I mean when I say, “a gift of love?” The Bible tells us about a love that is beyond our understanding; it is a love that is everlasting, a love that we do not deserve and yet the God of the Bible has freely given to us. This love that I am talking about is the gift of His only Son into this world. Around 2,000 years ago there was a little baby that was born that changed the world, as we know it. This little baby’s name is Jesus. A question that I have for you is, why? Why was He born into this world? The Bible teaches us that He came ‘to save His people from their sins.’ You see, this little baby would grow up one day and the Bible teaches us that He would go to the cross for the sins of the world. In the Bible it states that ‘God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.’ As you read these verses from the Bible you can see how much love that the God of the Bible has for us as human beings. You see, the Bible teaches that God truly desires to have you and I spend eternity in heaven, but there is only one problem. In order to go to heaven, you have to be perfect. And I don’t know about you, but I am not perfect, I fall so short of perfection. The Bible states that ‘all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.’ And yet it is clear that God desires us to spend eternity with him. You see, the Bible teaches many things about God, but I just want to point out two things to you. 1) He is a God of Love. ‘In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (covering) for our sins.’ 2) He is a Just God. Because He is just, He must do what is right. And because He must do what is right, He must judge our sin. For as I have already stated; we are guilty and we deserve judgment. So how do we as sinful people obtain the right to spend eternity with God in heaven if we are so full of sin? That is exactly where Jesus comes in. You see, the Bible teaches us that Jesus can relate to us as humans in every single way, except the fact that He did not sin. Because of this, the Bible teaches that He became that perfect and acceptable sacrifice upon the cross for our sins. The Bible states that ‘He who knew no sin became sin (died upon the cross & took our judgment) for us, that we might become the righteousness of God(have a right standing before God).’ Isn’t this amazing! As I think about it personally; I am the guilty one. I am the one who has done the wrong. I am the one that deserves judgment for my sin, and yet He (Jesus) took all of my sin, and not only mine, but all of the world’s sin upon Himself on that cross and took the judgment that you and I deserved. And yet the Bible states that ‘that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ Saved from what? Saved from judgment of your sin. Saved from eternal separation from God for all eternity. Saved from hell. So my question to you is this. Do you have the assurance that if you died today that you would spend eternity in heaven? If yes, why? Is it because you think you’re a good person? Is it because you are depending on your good works? Just briefly remember this, even if we are a “good” person and have “good” works, there still remains the fact that have sin in our lives. So what will we do with those sins? If you do not have the assurance of heaven, why not? I would love to talk to you about it either way.
As I have said already, I believe that this is the greatest gift that I can give to you this Christmas. To tell you about the One (Jesus) who has loved us with this everlasting love. Even though we are sinners, He died for us in our place. If we would just turn from our sins, ask for His forgiveness, place our trust in Him alone, He (Jesus) promises to forgive us of our sins, to give us a new life, and to give us this assurance of spending eternity in heaven with Him.
I want you to know that I love you all very much and pray for you often! Once again, I am so blessed to have each of you in my life! I do pray that you would consider what I have shared with you and want you to know that I am interested in talking to you more about it! I do pray that your would receive this gift of God’s love this Christmas! I promise you this, it will be the greatest gift that you will ever receive!
In love, I share all of this from my heart unto you,
Joey Roper

An Open Door

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to teach once again at CC Herborn. We continued our series that we have been doing throughout this year through the 7 letters written to the seven churches in the book of Revelation. This time I did not teach through the whole letter. The Lord really laid the first two verses on my heart, and so we really focused on these two verses. Here they are...

Revelation 3:7-8a "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 'These things says He who is holy, He who is true, "He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens": "I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it;"

I am going to just write about the main point of the study... I want you to notice what it says at the end of vs.7 and the beginning of vs.8. It states, 'He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens...See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it;"

The Lord speaks these statements to the church of Philadelphia which was known as a "missionary city," but not in the way that you might be thinking. It was more of a missionary city in the sense to reach this area with the Greek culture and language. It was known to have done such a good job at it, that the Lydian people had completely forgotten their language over a period of time and were only speaking Greek. Philadelphia was also known as "The Gate (or even better The Door) to the East." In a physical sense, the people in the city of Philadelphia used this opportunity to make an "influence" on all of those who would pass through. So why am I sharing this?

With that little bit of understanding, Jesus is telling this city that He has the key (His Authority) and He has opened the door, that no one can shut. It was His desire that the church in Philadelphia would also become that missional church. Just as the world was "seizing the moment" to influence the people passing through, they too needed to "seize the moment" with the power of the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ.

I believe that the Lord is speaking this same message to us today! He has said, "BEHOLD, I HAVE SET BEFORE YOU AN OPEN DOOR, AND NO ONE CAN SHUT IT." The first thing that I want you to notice is that He says, "I have set...," this is past tense. It means that the door is already open. The second thing that I want you to notice is that the door is OPEN! So many times in our Christian walk, we are asking the Lord to 'open the door' for this or for that. But what I do believe is that He has already opened the door for the sake of the Gospel! The third thing that I want to share with you comes with a little story. Every time my family and I come home from being out in the town, my daughters always want to race me to the front door. It is a little game that we play! Don't worry, I always let them win! Why do I share this with you? Because I see something important in it. I believe that we as Christians (the ones who have the TRUTH) should be the First One to the Open Door. Sadly to say, I am not sure if we always are!
I want to show you a few maps... these were the maps that I showed to our church here in Herborn.

As you look at this world map, I know that it can become overwhelming, but we must consider this. Who is going to be the first one to the Open Door that the Lord has set before us with the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? There are over 6 billion people on this map, and literally billions have never even heard of the Gospel.

This is the map of Europe. Who is going to be the first one to the Open Door of Europe. Recently I heard of some people that said that they are wiping the dust off their feet with Europe, saying that it is a useless mission field. All I have to say to that is.... WHAT A SHAME! Remember, Jesus has said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." I believe that Europe so desperately needs to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ once again!

This is the map of Germany? This is now getting closer and closer to us here in Deutschland. This is our home country. (I know that it is not my home country, but I said that to simply prove a point as I currently live here). Are we asking for the Lord to pour out His Spirit here in Germany? Are we the first ones to the Door of Opportunity to share the love of Jesus?

This is now the state of Hessen. This is the state that Herborn is situated in. Once again. Who is going to be the first one to the Open Door?

Lastly, you are looking at a local map of all of our local villages. This is where it all starts at. In fact, if we are not being the first one to the Open Door here in our "Jerusalem," then how do we think that we should go anywhere else?

Now I know that these might not best represent you. But I encourage you to start at the world map and slowly get closer and closer to where you live. Ask yourself this question. "Am I being faithful to the open door that is set before me with the Gospel of Jesus Christ?" I want to end by sharing you this verse...

2 Corinthians 5:20 "Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God."

Repentance - Video

Hello Everyone,
Recently I wrote a little devotion on Repentance. If you have not read it, please scroll down and read it. I want to share this video with you all. I just recently listened to this message from Pastor Britt Merrick from Reality Carpinteria and in the midst of his message, he talks on the topic of Repentance. I think this whole message is worth listening to. But I wanted to specifically share it with you since he also talks about this topic of Repentance. Check it out! It will be well worth the time spent!

Restoration

Joel 1:4 "What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten; And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten."

Today I want to share with you how the Lord is able to restore that which has been completely ruined...
As I examine this verse, I cannot but help but think of how the world can 'chew you up and spit you out.' Now I know that I am only 29 years old, but in my lifetime, I have seen many people that have been completely 'devoured' by the world and then in the end, left wanting. You see, we truly do have an adversary who is 'seeking whom he may devour.' (1 peter 5:8) And as you study the Scriptures you see that he has not changed his tactics at all since the fall of Adam and Eve. We read about these three tactics in 1 John 2:16, which states, "For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world." Isn't it amazing. We know that it will be in these three areas that he will seek to lead us astray and eventually get us to a point that we are so consumed in it, that we might not even recognize just how far we have gone into it. Or maybe, we do know, and we are ignoring the warnings from the Holy Spirt who is saying to us, "Don't go down that road any further. Turn back to Jesus."

To my brothers and sisters, is this you today? If so, I want to show you the next verse in 1 John chapter two, which states, "And the world is passing away, and the lust of it;" Why is it that we find ourselves constantly pursuing, seeking, and engaging in to the things that are passing away? Have we not learned from Solomon who has declared to us in Ecclesiates 2:10-11 "Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun." He says that all was vanity (uselessness;worthless). He is basically saying that nothing that this world had to offer him was worth it!

Maybe you have found yourself living out Proverbs 26:11, which states, "As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly." You have found yourself making the same mistakes over and over again. Maybe today you are falling back into the same schemes of your past mistakes. Maybe you are falling into the same traps that the enemy has been laying for mankind since the fall. I want to encourage you today to please turn to Jesus! Surrender your life to Him today! Confess your weaknesses before Him and ask him to please renew your life. The amazing thing about Jesus, is that He is in the business of restoring people...

Let's look at Joel 2:25-27...
"So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; And My people shall never be put to shame. Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the Lord your God and there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame."

The word restore simply means that He will make you whole again. You must know and understand that this is the desire of the Lord! He desires to make you whole again. You don't need to put your head down in shame today! You need to lift your eyes to the King of kings and ask for forgiveness, repent from your sins, and let Him do the restoring work that is needed in your life. Now please understand this. This process of restoration is both immediate and it also takes some time. It is immediate, because it states in 1 John 1:9, " If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to scleanse us from all unrighteousness." But it will also take some time because our God is the Potter and we are the clay. It will be a process that you or I might need to go through. There are some areas that He will show you that need to change in your life. There are some habits or some decisions that need to change in your life.

So, today, would you surrender yourself under the restoring hands of the Lord and ask Him to do that work in your life that is needed?

True Repentance

Joel 2:12-13a “Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” 13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God,

Repentance. What exactly does this word mean? I like the way that I have heard David Hocking say it...“Repentance means a change of mind and conduct (the way we live our lives). We need to think differently about our priorities and then start manifesting that difference in the way we think, speak, and perform. REPENTANCE SUGGESTS THE NEED FOR RADICAL CHANGE.”

The Lord spoke through the prophet Joel to His own people and He gave them the message that has been declared throughout the ages. Repent. But I want you to see some clear points on this topic of repentance.
If you note the first few words that are stated, 'Turn to Me.' This is the first step toward repentance. It is a complete turning away from your current state of mind, your current situation, your current sin(s), and a turning to the Lord.
Secondly, we see a very important part of repentance. 'With all of your heart.' This is not a mere saying that you are 'sorry' for what you have done. This is a point of true confession and remorse for what you have done. It is now to the point of turning to Him with ALL of your heart. I want to simply say this...if you and I do not turn back to Him with ALL of our hearts, then we have not truly repented.
Thirdly, we see how emotion is brought into the mixture. 'With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.' As we consider this point, we must be reminded of the fact that the Lord knows exactly what is going on in our hearts and we cannot trick Him or play a game with Him. I believe that many times, we as His people, try to demonstrate to Him that we have repented. This is both good and bad. Bad, because we can just go through the motions and not really have a true heart of repentance. But also Good, because I believe that God has made us emotional people and we can clearly demonstrate to Him through our actions and emotions, that we have truly turned back to Him with a true heart of repentance. Now I don't want you to think that you always need to fast, weep, and mourn. But I have a few questions for you and I. Do we mourn over our sin? Do we weep over our sin? I want to confess to you that I do not weep enough over my sin. Too often I have had a light attitude about it. What about you?
Fourthly, I want you to see the powerful statement that follows...'So rend your heart, and not your garments.' What exactly does this mean? "One expression of mourning in the Jewish culture is tearing the clothes. It was a way to say, "I am so overcome with grief, that I don't care if my clothes are ruined and I look bad."1 But what does this mean to you and me today? It means that the Lord doesn't want you to go through the outward motions if your heart is not truly in it. You see, our hearts need to be broken before the Lord. In Psalm 51:17, it states, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-- These, O God, You will not despise."
Last of all, we see the statement once again...'Return to the Lord your God.' Here in this statement, I hear the Lord declaring this to us in His amazing voice of love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. I know that you and I do not deserve a 2nd, 3rd, 4th,.... chance, and yet He invites us to turn back to Him once again with ALL of our hearts, to get back into that fellowship with Him.

I am not sure where you are at today with our Lord Jesus Christ. I am not sure if you died today if you know for sure that you will go to heaven or not. But I do know this. That the God of the Bible invites us to repent today; to turn from our sinful ways, and to turn back to Him with ALL of our hearts. What are you doing with your life? What are you currently involved in? Repent. Make a radical change in your lifestyle, and turn to Him.
You might ask the following question.... WHY? Let me simply share with you the rest of Joel 2:13 and I believe that will answer your question.

Joel 2:13b-14a "For He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm. 14 Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him— "

Get right with Jesus today! Experience His forgiveness! Be faithful to make the changes that need to be made in your life!
I love you all dearly!
God Bless You
